What is Reflexology?
Give your feet a treat and your whole body will thank you!
Reflexology has its roots in the ancient civilisations of Egypt, China and Africa. As we know it today, Reflexology was first researched and developed by Eunice Ingham. Her theory was that electrical impulses travel down the body, from the head to the feet, penetrating various organs and structures on the way. Reflexology is now a precisely defined form of treatment based on the principle that the anatomy of the body is reflected in miniature on reflex zones on the feet and the hands. By using specific techniques of holds and pressures on these areas, healing is encouraged in the corresponding area of the body.
One of the wonders of Reflexology is that it brings about the same sensations of relaxation and restfulness that a full body massage can produce and therefore it may be most useful in the treatment of stress.
Each of my reflexology treatments is tailored to the individual, combining skills involving aromatherapy as in AromaReflexology (using essential oils), Mindful Reflexology using visualisation techniques, or Spinal Reflexology which is very powerful to resolve structural issues affecting the general working of the body.
Who may be helped by a Reflexology treatment?
Most people may benefit from a reflexology treatment and there is no minimum or maximum age limit. A course of treatment varies according to how acute or chronic the condition is, the number of sessions and their frequency depend on the patient's health and response. Conditions such as
Reflexology is a safe approach to healing the body that relies entirely on the skill of the practitioner and the healing qualities of the patient. Receiving Reflexology treatments before and during pregnancy may be extremely beneficial. Reflexology may encourage the body to minimise the length and intensity of labour, may benefit babies on a physical and even emotional level, may reduce anxiety and may facilitate recovery after birth.
Maternity Reflexology is a specific approach to Reflexology which focuses on either:
* improving fertility,
* avoiding miscarriages, supporting the pregnancy in a holistic way as dealing with anxiety and stress
* improving the health of mother and baby during pregnancy, (morning sickness / heartburn / aches & pains/ tiredness, and structural
problems such as pubis symphisis and back pain, haemorroids)
* encouraging the onset of labour,
* as well recovery after birth.
It requires a level of commitment from the patient as to the regularity of treatments and certain lifestyle changes in order to guarantee maximum benefits.
For example, to maximise chances of a trouble-free birth and minimise side-effects, it is recommended to have a minimum of six sessions before the due date (one every week), and sometimes one or two treatments past this date, if necessary.
My experience of Reflexology has shown me that women who are used to receiving reflexology treatments (not necessarily on a regular basis) before getting pregnant or at the onset of their pregnancy never experience the devastating effects of morning sickness or heartburn and are generally able to support a healthy pregnancy throughout, even if after the first 3 or 4 months they only receive one reflexology session a month! A therapy like no other that provide multiple benefits and is increasingly documented in the world of integrative medicine and adopted by an increasing number of mid-wives.
